Discover Agaete

Agaete is a fishing town is situated in the northwest of Gran Canaria, just about 30 kilometers from the capital of the island, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.

In the historic centre there is the church of the Conception, which replaced the primitive chapel (1515) and gave rise to the first streets and town´s square of the borough. With the construction of the new parish church after a fire in 1874, a new residential area was created in the borough. In front of it is the  Constitution´s Square that was built arround the main buildings of the town.

Agaete also has some important green areas which are a must for visitors: el Huerto de las Flores (The Flower Garden) and the Tamadaba Natural Park. The flower garden is actually a botanical garden in the town centre with a large variety of exotic plant species. It was a meeting place and somewhere to meditate for famous poets of the Canary Islands such as Tomás Morales, Saulo Torón and Alonso Quesada. The Tamadaba Natural Park is a protected arealargest pine forest at the highest altitude of Agaete (1.180 metres), with the in Gran Canaria.

Another particularly pleasant visit is a stroll through Port of Las Nieves, the coastal area of the borough. This is the location of the Chapel of Nuestra Señora de Las Nieves. The Port of Las Nieves is also an ideal place to have a walk through and have a swim in the clean waters of the Atlantic, to see what was the Dedo de Dios (God’s Finger), a magnificent natural monument and symbol of Gran Canaria: a rock formation that stood near the coast town of Agaete reaching out of the sea that was destroyed by the Delta Storm. They say it was the writer Domingo Doreste, 'Fray Lesco', who named it the Finger of God due to it´s shape. Agaete´s Port it´s a place to where you will enjoy the a great sunset view and if you have luck the majesty of the mountain of Teide.

Agaete is one of the borough of Gran Canaria a lot of variety of beaches, although they are mainly rocky and difficult to get to. If you continue walking the seaside walk you will find several natural pools which are ideal for underwater diving.
The main beach, most visited is Las Nieves beach, located between the marina and the old pier.  It´s a mainly stony beach with calmed clear water and a seaside walk with restaurants.
If you come to Agaete you must try a "fish and seafood paella" or a"platter of good fish" from the local area they are some of the main dishes of the gastronomy of the area that I´m sure you will love specially after a swim in the beach. But remember in order to try these specially the paella, it is best to book a table at one of the restaurants on the seaside walk in the Port of Las Nieves, you can also try the most traditional Canary Islands cuisine: scalded gofio, wrinkled potatoes, vinaigrettes and all kinds of fried fish.

Agaete also has its goat cheese, characterised by its smoothness and distinctive flavour. In fact, we should stand out that Agaete has a series of traditional handcrafted cheese factories, such as the "Arterra" yoghurt and The goat cheese factory in the district of El Risco.

The commercial area of Agaete is mainly located in the Port of Las Nieves, as this is the area with the largest number of visitors and tourists, particularly at weekends. Points of interest include the main street with craft shops, food and clothe stores.

I´m sure you will love it and will have a great they in this beautiful town of white houses.
